Spring 2015: Tech Trends

Wearables

Now, wearables are everywhere. In the market, people can find a lot of smart watches, fitness bands and smart glasses. Fitness trackers are becoming more high tech, offering true insights and recommendations for athletic training. More accurate sensors are embed into wearable devices to track people’s body conditions. In 2015, we will find products such as smart jewelry and smart clothing. They will also be fitness-focused and with high tech fashion. For example, clothes can change colour based on people’s emotion, and others can detect wetness in the air.

Mobile Payment

Mobile payment brings convenience to people’s daily life. Instead of paying with cash, cheque, or credit cards, people can use their mobile phone to pay for a variety of services. For example, we can use our phone to pay bills and shop. In 2015, about five percent of the base of 600 million NFC equipped smartphones worldwide will be used to make an in-store NFC payment at least once a month.

AR & VR

Augmented reality (AR) and Virtual reality (VR) are becoming a part of everyday life with the advancement of other technologies such as computer visioning systems sensing technologies, graphics and mobile computing. The difference between VR and AR is significant. As we see in the Oculus Rift or Project Morpheus, Virtual Reality surrounds the user in a virtual experience like an immersive video game or movie. As we see in Google Glass or Microsoft’s HoloLens, augmented reality layers virtual information or graphics on top of the real world. Over the last few years, AR and VR has shown significant growth within the tech sector. The year of 2015 will undoubtedly be a year of VR & AR.

3D Printing

3D printing is any one of various processes used to make a 3-dimensional object. The 3D object can be of almost any shape or geometry. In recent years, consumer class 3D printers are become more and more popular, but generally, they lack in precision, scale, and material choice. In 2015, 3D printing devices will continue to improve rapidly and industrial use will expand significantly. Worldwide shipments of 3D printers are expected to grow by 98 percent. The expansion will be biggest in industrial, biomedical, and consumer applications, helping companies to reduce major costs. People will see more affordable options in the market as well.
